What is karma? Understanding action and intention

Karma is a topic that often evokes many emotions and misunderstandings. I wanted to share with you my view on karma, its essence and how it shapes our lives.

What is karma?

Karma in its simplest form means action. Every decision we make, every word we say, and every gesture we make is part of the karma we create. From the perspective of the universe, karma is the inherent mechanism by which consciousness experiences itself through different forms of existence.

Intention vs action

At the root of every karma is intention. Our desires drive us to action, and that action creates effects that come back to us. Our desires reflect what we need to change our current situation, and every action is a response to that inner call.

The law of cause and effect

One of the key principles of karma is the law of cause and effect. Everything we do has consequences, even if they are not immediately visible. As humans, we have choices, and it is these choices that shape our future. That is why it is so important to make decisions consciously, considering their impact on our lives and the environment.

Every being, whether human, animal or plant, has karma. We can think of it as seeds that we sow through our actions, and what happens to us in life is the result of previous sowings – both from this life and previous lives.

Work your karma

Consciously understanding karma is the first step to working on it. It requires us to work internally to get rid of negative patterns and free ourselves from the cycle of suffering. It is a lifelong process, but it is the key to inner transformation and harmony.

Dharma vs karma

Dharma, or doing what is right, is key to the process of purifying karma. Our intentions must be pure and our actions consistent with our true nature. This requires deep self-inquiry and understanding of our calling.

The elements and karma

One of my favorite ways to work with karma is to cultivate a relationship with the elements. Each of us has a dominant element that can help us balance our energy on a daily basis. Spending time in touch with our element—such as observing a fire—can greatly heighten our awareness and bring peace to our lives.

Practices with the elements

  • Meditation by the fire: Helps to calm the mind and clear internal blockages.
  • Daily presence with the elements: Even a few minutes in contact with nature, such as a walk in the forest or a bath in water, can bring enormous benefits.

Influence of the practice

Regular spiritual practice, such as meditation or yoga, can help us heal karma. Every conscious act of compassion, of helping another person, influences our experiences and opens us to new possibilities.

Examples of the practice

  • Meditation: A daily moment of silence allows us to understand our desires and better direct our actions.
  • Karma yoga: Selfless service to others is one of the most powerful tools for clearing karma.
  • Conscious choices: Every choice we make has meaning. It is important to follow our heart and align with our dharma.

Karma is an incredibly complex and profound topic. However, when we begin to understand it, we can actively shape our lives and strive for harmony. I wrote more about this in my book “Life of Ultimate Freedom” so if you are interested in this topic, I encourage you to explore it. Every step we take toward awareness is a step toward a better life. I believe that by working on ourselves, we can not only heal ourselves, but also the world around us.

With Love,
Pauli
